Software industry experts are predicting that supply chain management software will generate a staggering £4billion of sales by 2010, which would make it one of the world’s most widely bought global business specialist applications.

Supply chain management software has proved extremely popular over the last 30 years with businesses that operate in time and cost conscious production and distribution environments. As with most cutting-edge technologies, supply chain management software functionality has undergone exponential advances, especially in the last five years which have allowed it to keep pace with an ever-changing business world.

It is the adaptive nature of the software and its ability to drive successful businesses that will propel supply chain management software to the top of the software sales charts. At the outset, early systems focused purely on transactions, but it wasn’t until the recent advent of client server technology that supply chain management systems could be more easily understood and accepted by users.

Organisations are increasingly operating across a number of time zones on different continents, and as well as the geographical and cultural challenges faced, there is the added problem of multiple distribution channels. With greater emphasis placed on empowerment of users through access to information, supply chain executives have added pressure piled on them to ensure that they embrace globalisation, battle obsolescence and also to contain costs, in addition to their day job!

The trials and tribulations of supply chain executives make them aggressive when demanding improvements to software. They want something that can do all the above and make sure they can control inventory and suppliers, and supply chain management software companies are more than happy to oblige. They are quick to adopt new technologies in their quest for the perfect supply chain management software and have naturally embraced the web in their designs.

Indeed, the internet acts as a superb connectivity tool for supply chain management software. A whole suite of collaborative programs for the entire supply chain can be operated over the web, which impacts positively on forecasting and planning while providing a transparent view of the performance measures.

Today’s advanced systems can bring together a huge number of suppliers at the click of a mouse, using XML web services and trading portals, and have certainly come a long way from the primitive EDI systems of the 1970s. But, possibly the biggest difference between today’s successful supply chain management systems and their forerunners is the impact they have in helping workers make decisions.

That is the true value of any successful system, allowing the business to keep the supply chain in perfectly efficient working order while providing many opportunities to control increasingly diverse supplier relationships and inventory portfolios. For as long as there are companies operating in aggressively competitive markets, the future looks bright for sales of supply chain management software.

Understanding how a burglar selects a target can help homeowners reduce their chances of being a victim. Most burglaries occur at homes that appear to have quick, easy access and/or lots of cover that reduces the chance of being seen. Think of landscaping and exterior security devices as your first line of defense. Following are tips to safeguard your yard.

Lighting
Use automatic timers on inside and outside lights when away from home.

Install motion detector lights around your house instead of just leaving lights on at night. The lights coming on and turning off attract the attention of neighbors. Install these lights at least 8 feet above the ground so they are more difficult to disable.

Install the motion detector lights so they light all doors and windows. Doors, since they are the preferred entry point, should be the first priority to illuminate, followed by windows.

Yard and Landscaping
Remove bushes and shrubs from around the house, especially under windows and next to doors. They provide a good place to hide next to the house. Also, keep your yard free of overgrowth. This will allow your neighbors to easily detect strangers in your yard.

If you do have shrubs and bushes, select ones with thorns to deter potential intruders from hiding in them.

Remove tree limbs that could allow someone to climb to an upper-story window or balcony.

Think carefully before installing a high, wooden fence around your back yard. High fences can add to your privacy but privacy is a burglar’s asset. Consider an iron railing (topped with spikes, to discourage climbers), picket or chain-link fence instead. If you have a gate, install a strong magnetic lock on it to prevent intruders from easily penetrating the perimeter of your property.

Put big, bold numbers on your mailbox so your home can easily be identified in case of an emergency.

Never put your name on your mailbox. Anyone can call directory assistance, get your number, and find out you aren’t home.

Don’t hide a spare key near your front door; burglars know all the hiding places. Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbor instead.

Tell burglars to steer clear of your home by placing alarm company signs, neighborhood watch decals or dog notices on your property.

Consider installing an intercom system featuring motion-sensor video that turns on when someone approaches your house. If you live on your own, consider implementing a camera bell so you can see who is approaching.

If you have video surveillance cameras, get a lockbox to store the central recording device so a thief can’t make off with the record of their crime.

Baby video monitors can double as surveillance monitors for other points on your property.

If you travel a lot, surveillance cameras (with viewing access through the Internet) will allow you to keep an eye on your home while you’re gone.

Lock up the garage or tool shed. Don’t let a burglar break-in by borrowing your ladder to enter through your upstairs window.

It’s not easy to keep secure on the internet these days, our electronic lives means that personal information is more valuable than ever. Learn a little bit about someone, some information and a password or two and you have a lot of power over them. That information is becoming easier to find the more we lead our lives on the internet. To highlight a point using a free anonymous web proxy is never going to keep you secure.

Some Hotel Snooping

Last week I stayed in a very nice hotel when I was working away from home. As I get rather bored some evenings being stuck on my own I often have a snoop around the hotel network to see what I can find. This was a large chain and the wireless connection to the internet was available at a large cost but as I was on expenses I happily paid rather than look for an alternative method! The login was simple and the surfing reasonably fast but very insecure.

After connecting I started up a copy of the free program wireshark which is an excellent network sniffer. Do you know what I saw – well everything really. The majority of web traffic is in clear text – so I can see every web page being requested and information being sent and received by every client in range – approximately about 35 with my Orinoco Gold card but I could easily get more with an external antenna.

I saw some strange web sites and some passwords, personal information, dates of birth, mothers maiden names that sort of stuff. All in clear text plainly visible to me – the only difficulty was the amount of information that was there but there are plenty of scripts available to filter this. Some stuff was encrypted from SSL sites but very little – how many people use the same passwords to access insecure sites as they use on their banking sites I wonder!

But to illustrate the point of this article I wanted to explain how much of this information would have been visible to me in that hotel from a surfer using an anonymous proxy?

That’s simple – all of it !

Yep that’s right all of it – every detail, an anonymous proxy shields your identity from the web server you are visiting, nothing else. It’s all visible to your ISP, the proxy owner and even bored computer geeks in the hotel room next door to you. So it’s a little bit anonymous but it won’t keep you secure. With a little effort I could have trapped lots of data in that one evening and tied it up to real people, via the hotel web system, room numbers and the emails and addresses whizzing across the ether.

It’s really not surprising that criminals prefer this method of stealing, it’s way safer and I guess much more profitable than mugging people in the street. It’s even easier when people are feeling secure by using a free anonymous proxy to keep secure.
